Things You Will Need

Before you start to trim hair, you must gather the tools necessary so that you save time fetching a missing item every now and then. You will need cutting scissors, fine tooth cutting comb, spray bottle filled with clean water and mirror. An apron, ponytail holder, hair clippers and thinning scissors are optional depending on the style you want to achieve and the area being trimmed of excess hair.

You can purchase these tools from stores in individual packs or as home haircutting kits. Either way, you must ensure that the cutting tools are sharp, clean and handles well simply because a good cut depends on them. That is, aside from a steady and creative hand.

Things to Do

When you trim hair, you must make sure that the area being trimmed is damp, not dry. However, it will not also do to have it very wet as the results will be very different indeed. Thus, you can either spray the area with water using the spray bottle, obviously, or you may also wash your hair before toweling it dry. If you are trimming your bangs, the steps after wetting the hair are:

Comb through the hair in 1.5-inch sections. While holding one section, snip off its very ends with the scissors in a process called dusting.
Continue to the next sections until you are satisfied with the results. Remember not to cut off too much as it is always better to have bangs that are a little bit on the long side than to have them on the short side. You can always trim hair if it is on the long side!
Let your hair air dry. Then check if you have skipped strands of hair and snip off just a little. The beauty of bangs nowadays is that it need not be ruler-line straight unless you are in kindergarten.

For your split-ends, you should pull your hair into a ponytail at the base of your skull, if possible. Now, place the bundled hair over your shoulder, twist it and grasp near the ends to firmly secure the hair in your hands. Now, snip through the split-ends and/or any excess hair that needs trimming. Brush your hair and see if any split-ends, flyaway strands and other excess hair still need to be clipped. And you're done.
